I WASN'T THERE

This song is deeply personal as it draws on my observations of depression and schizophrenia. These diseases create a barrier to reality in the mind and I wanted to offer a view from the perspective of a sufferer. Mental illness is so often misunderstood or even ignored with tragic consequences. The song travelled through many incarnations until Hawks made the lyrics obvious through melody. Add a Tommy bridge and we were cooking. - Alan
VERSE 1
I wasn't there that day when the tears flowed
the sadness in your eyes
saw it in your face
leaving not a trace
of love
for you to hide
CHORUS
When you look for blame look away, from me
I was even there that day
Chasing demons
I saw it all
I simply wasn't there at all.
VERSE 2
I saw myself the other day
Didn't even say hello
Only the vaguest hint so indistinct
déjà vu
CHORUS
BRIDGE
I hear you call
Calling me back
Watching you,
watching me
Running away
Don't dismay
CHORUS
